    Tips for Leaf Photos

    For our morphological measurements, we need leaves to be as flat as possible! Closing them in a heavy book for 10 minutes or so is a great way to do this.

    While professional cameras are certainly not necessary, the higher quality the image the better in order for us to carefully analyze even the tiniest details of each leaf.

    Leaf Length is the distance from the convergence point in the middle of the leaf where the leaflets (or lobes) meet to the tip of the middle leaflet. Above, leaflet number 4 is the middle leaflet and length is indicated by the black solid line.

    Leaf Width is the distance between the furthest leaflet tips. Above, the furthest leaf tips belong to leaflets 2 and 6 and width is indicated by the dotted line. However, the furthest leaflets could be leaves 3 and 5 or another pair, depending on the number of leaflets present.
